Reliably tracking the sludge blanket in a primary or secondary clarifier has been a problem since clarifiers were first used in wastewater treatment. Entech Design, Inc. solved the problem while working in the power industry designing a sonar device which would provide a 3D representation of underwater slag heaps under the burners. The key was software and the lessons they learned in the power industry are now available to wastewater plant operators tired of manually measuring their sludge blanket levels. The software automatically tracks the chosen interface and doesn't get fooled by plant upsets or the passing of the rake. It runs on a 32-bit processor and provides a graphic display of your sludge profile while transmitting a 4-20 mADC signal which you can use to control your pumps.
