Municipal Manufacturer's Representative for Process Control Instrumentation

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works monitors its 25 stormwater pumping plants for leaks of natural gas around the pumps in their pumping plants.  Each plant has three large pumps which run on natural gas.  They decided to monitor for combustible gas leaks at two points around each pump, plus they also monitor for combustible gasses in the stairway to the wetwell and in the wetwell itself.

They purchased 25 eight-channel Chemgards manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances to make the leak detection measurements.  The Chemgard uses an infra-red photo-accoustic sensor which is tuned to detect methane and other common explosive gasses.  It has an eight-point sampling system and draws air from each sampling point to a common sensor.

This was a cost-effective solution since they were able to make the measurements for under $1800.00 per point which includes three levels of alarm for each point, trouble indication and a menu-driven configuration routine.
